Modi Era (2014–2026): An Analysis of Student Movements, the Education System, and Democratic Accountability — Gopal Prasad Khateek (RTI Activist)

Modi Era (2014–2026): An Analysis of Student Movements, the Education System, and Democratic Accountability — Gopal Prasad Khateek (RTI Activist) Since 2014, there has been extensive public debate concerning India’s politics, administration, and education system. One section of critics believes that this period has witnessed trends such as excessive centralisation of power, a decline in institutional accountability, and a strict administrative approach towards dissent. The government, on the other hand, has rejected these allegations and has maintained that it is committed to good governance, transparency, and development. Against this broader backdrop, the student movement of 2026 emerged as an important political and social development. The NEET examination controversy, alleged paper leaks, questions regarding examination management, and growing concerns about students’ futures brought the movement into the national discourse. 1. Growing Questions About the Education System The core issues behind the student movement have been the credibility of the education system, the fairness of competitive examinations, and the protection of young people’s futures. Repeated examination-related controversies have created a sense of insecurity and distrust among millions of students and parents. 2. Government and Institutional Accountability Critics argue that recurring shortcomings in the examination system have raised serious questions about the functioning of the institutions concerned. Such incidents have intensified public debate regarding administrative responsibility, monitoring mechanisms, and the effectiveness of corrective measures. 3. Ideological Debate Opposition parties and some student organisations have alleged that attempts have been made to increase ideological influence over the education system. The government and organisations associated with it, however, have continued to reject these allegations as unfounded. Consequently, the controversy has extended beyond examination management and has also become part of a broader ideological debate. 4. Growing Discontent Among Youth Growing concerns among young people regarding employment, transparency in competitive examinations, and uncertainty about their future have become major factors behind the movement. Protests and administrative action in several places have further brought this discontent into the public spotlight. 5. Political Impact The movement naturally became part of the political discourse. Opposition parties described it as an example of policy failure on the part of the government, while the ruling side highlighted its achievements and corrective measures. As a result, the issue of education moved to the centre of national political debate. 6. Potential Impact on Young Voters India is one of the world’s youngest countries. If concerns regarding the credibility of competitive examinations and employment are not effectively addressed, they could influence the political outlook and voting behaviour of young people. However, the actual impact will become clear only through future electoral outcomes. 7. Need for Democratic Dialogue In a democratic system, responding to public movements through dialogue, transparency, and institutional reforms is generally considered more effective. If the concerns of the student community are addressed within a defined timeframe, confidence in the education system can be restored. Conclusion The student movement cannot be viewed merely as a protest against a particular examination or alleged paper leak. It has brought broader questions concerning the education system, administrative accountability, public confidence among young people, and democratic dialogue to the national level. If the government ensures structural reforms in the education system, examination security, transparent investigation mechanisms, and time-bound accountability, it could strengthen the confidence of young people. Conversely, if these concerns are not effectively addressed, such discontent may continue to influence public and political discourse in the future.
