RTI Activist Seeks Probe into Use of Government Resources for Prime Minister’s Political Activities
RTI activist Gopal Prasad has submitted a memorandum to nine top constitutional authorities—including the President of India, Chief Justice of India, Lok Sabha Speaker, Election Commission, and NITI Aayog—demanding an inquiry into the use of government resources for political purposes by the Prime Minister.
The memorandum raises the question: If a sitting Prime Minister, such as Shri Narendra Modi, or any future Prime Minister, uses public funds, official travel, security cover, protocol, and state facilities for the promotion of a specific political party’s rallies, campaigns, or events, what is the legal and constitutional basis for such practice?
Mr. Prasad has sought detailed disclosure of all expenditures incurred by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) between 2014 and 2025, including heads such as travel, security, residence construction, publicity/advertisements, gifts, and entertainment.
“In a democracy, the Prime Minister belongs to the nation, not to a single political party. If state resources are used for partisan promotion, it amounts to misuse of public money and violation of constitutional propriety,” said Mr. Prasad.
He has urged the President and the Supreme Court to take cognizance, so that in future no constitutional office-holder misuses taxpayers’ money for party politics.
