Abbott India’s Negligence in Thyroid Medicine Endangers Patients’ Lives
Grave allegations have surfaced against Abbott India Limited, a subsidiary of US-based Abbott Laboratories (Chicago).
In 2023, under the chairmanship of Munir Sheikh (49% stake), thyroid medicine of 88 mg strength was wrongly labeled as 25 mg. This error led to the circulation of millions of faulty tablets in the Indian market.
As a result, numerous patients reported severe health complications, and at least two deaths have been confirmed. Experts warn that overdose of thyroid medicine can trigger heart attacks and other fatal conditions.
Instead of addressing this grave lapse, the company merely published a small newspaper advertisement, failing to take responsibility or notify the public adequately.
Public Demands:
An independent, high-level investigation into the case.
Fixing accountability for the deaths and deteriorating health of patients.
Strict punitive action against Abbott India and responsible officials.
Clarification from CDSCO and the Ministry of Health on the measures taken post-incident.
This incident proves that corporate negligence by foreign companies directly threatens Indian lives. The Government of India and the Judiciary must urgently intervene.
